Rasteau, a Coveted Terroir Since Antiquity

Rasteau’s winemaking history dates back to Antiquity. Remains of Roman thermal baths and amphorae discovered in the area confirm the presence of viticultural activity as early as 30 BC. The first sweet wines, attributed to the Voconces, are mentioned as early as 70 AD.

During the Middle Ages, this fertile land remained under the influence of the ecclesiastical world. Until the 14th century, the Church and the bishops of Vaison-la-Romaine made Rasteau their main wine supplier. Despite troubled periods – crusades, epidemics and agricultural crises – the vineyard survived thanks to the perseverance of its inhabitants.

Following the phylloxera crisis in the 19th century, the vines were replanted using American rootstocks. The 20th century marked a decisive period of vineyard development, with the creation of the first cooperative winery in 1925, followed by numerous independent wineries. This collective momentum led, in 2010, to the official recognition of Rasteau as a Cru des Côtes du Rhône.

An Exceptional Terroir Characterised by Blue Clays

The Rasteau vineyard stretches across a hilly landscape rising to 360 metres above sea level, facing south towards the Dentelles de Montmirail. This amphitheatre-shaped topography provides optimal sunshine while offering some protection from the mistral.

The soils are one of the appellation’s greatest assets. Rasteau is based on a complex geological mosaic:

• blue marine marls, emblematic of the Cru,
• red lacustrine marls,
• sandy marls and safres,
• limestone gravel, pebbles and stones.

The constant presence of clay provides excellent water regulation during periods of drought and plays a key role in the development of aromatic and tannic compounds. These “poor” yet well-balanced soils give rise to wines that are powerful, structured and remarkably refined.

Mediterranean Climate and the Influence of the Mistral

Rasteau’s Mediterranean climate is characterised by hot, dry summers, mild winters and abundant sunshine. The south-facing slopes encourage the over-ripening of the grape clusters, while the mistral, although partially moderated by the surrounding relief, keeps the vineyard healthy and concentrates the grapes. These natural conditions are ideal for producing deep red wines and highly intense Vin Doux Naturel wines.

Rasteau’s Grape Varieties: Power and Balance

Grape varieties play a central role in the identity of Rasteau wines. The AOC specifications require a strong predominance of Grenache Noir, the undisputed leading grape variety of the Cru.

• Grenache Noir (≥ 50%): brings richness, warmth and aromas of ripe fruit and spices.

• Syrah: intense colour, aromatic freshness and notes of black fruit and violet.

• Mourvèdre: tannic structure, depth and ageing potential.

• Carignan and other accessory grape varieties: complexity and ageing potential.

This combination gives rise to balanced, powerful yet never excessive wines, capable of developing harmoniously over time.

Alain Jaume Family’s Rasteau “Les Valats”

Among the remarkable expressions of the appellation, the Alain Jaume Family’s Rasteau “Les Valats” perfectly illustrates the Cru’s typical character. The name Les Valats refers, in agriculture, to a natural drainage ditch for rainwater, and more broadly, in southern France, to a ravine or small valley. The name evokes a terroir shaped by water, landscape and time.

The cuvée is composed of:

• 90% Grenache,

• 5% Syrah,

• 5% Mourvèdre.

The wine stands out for its slightly candied fruit aromas – redcurrant and blackberry – combined with beautiful tannic richness. On the palate, the profile is generous and sun-kissed, supported by a full-bodied and structured texture. The long, persistent finish reveals peppery, minty and chocolatey notes, the signature of a great gastronomic Rasteau.

It is a generous and powerful wine, ideal with red meats, slow-cooked dishes or Mediterranean cuisine rich in flavour.
